Seeding Rate
- 🌾 45 lb/acre (1 bag = 1 acre)
- 🏡 Garden: 1.25–1.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft
- 🦌 Increase seed rate by 25–50% for broadcast applications or areas with high deer pressure
Seed Broadcasting
*Broadcast – increase by 5%-20% – depending on the thatch layer you are broadcasting into. Less thatch, you will likely need slightly more seed. Note, we have small and large seeds in this mix – intentionally to increase our success for all planting methods.
When to Plant: August–September (zone-dependent)
- ❄️ Zones 3–4: Early August
- 🍁 Zones 5–6: Mid to Late August
- 🌞 Zones 7–8: Late August to Mid-September
Planting Instructions
Broadcast – increase 10-25% seeding rate
Nitro Boost Planting:
Spread and Mow -
This method is popular for those who don’t want to use herbicide or don’t have a crimper/crusher/cultipacker. Just as it sounds, spread the seed, mow off the previous crop, and pray for rain! This is not a great option if you have a ton of weed pressure. If you are planting Carbon Load into a beautiful stand of Nitro Boost, this works very well, or vice versa.
Spray and Seed
This method is excellent for those who are ok with using herbicides. Spray the existing vegetation with GLY (we recommend letting GLY dry) or Glufosinate. Let them dry and then put them into the standing vegetation. You can then mow/roll it down over the seed.
Spread and Crimp/Crush
Many want to avoid herbicide use. If you have a crimper, lawn roller, cultipacker, or even a drag harrow, you can try the spread and roll method. This is where you spread the seed and then crush/crimp/roll the existing vegetation over top of it. Some will still use herbicide with this method after rolling the weeds over—this helps dry out the weed mat faster and gives you a higher kill rate.
Till/Disc
We recognize that some still like to till/disc. Any step towards soil conservation is a step in the correct direction. Our recommendation is to practice “conservation tillage.” This is where you hardly turn the soil, and once complete, you leave 30%+ soil covered with residue.
- Lightly disc/till (conservation tillage)
- Spread seed
- Pack or drag seed to give a firm seed bed.
Nitro Boost – should be planted when soil temps get to 55+ degrees
Carbon Load – should be panted 40-60 days from the first frost in your area. Most of Midwest will be at the end of July-Labor Day, depending on the growers’ goals.
Carbon Load Planting:
The same as above will all suffice for Carbon Load planting.
Due to the nature of Nitro-Boost and the nutrient cycling properties, we can add one more planting method.
Broadcast into the standing Nitro Boost or Carbon Load
Much of the Nitro boost will die off in the fall as the cool season annuals in Carbon Load will be ready to jump out of the ground from all the free NB sequestered nutrients. Broadcasting into Nitro Boost before the rain will allow structure and a carpet of lush green to feed your soil and whitetails all year.
Drilling Instructions
- Calibrate your drill to 45 lbs. to the acre.
- You can drill a bit more lbs per acre if your deer density is higher
- Drill at ¼ to ½ deep
- Plant when soil temps are 55 degrees and rising
Drill Seed Options
- Drill and drive away – this is if you have a clean NB or CL plot you are planting into. Drill into it with the next planting and drive off. It will yield a mess of food for the soil and deer!
- Spray and drill – just as it sounds – spray existing vegetation and drill through it.
- Drill then crimp or mow – similar to above, for those wanting to reduce herbicide, you can drill and then use a physical means of termination to help aid in the

Species Breakdown: Why Each is the Best

Cereal Grains (Structure + Cover)
- Fall Triticale — A cross between wheat and rye, combining cold tolerance and digestibility. Overwinters well and continues to provide forage and cover through spring green-up.
- Winter Wheat — Palatable and reliable with early spring regrowth; roots improve structure and protect against erosion well into the next season.
- Rye Grain — One of the hardiest cereals. Excellent overwintering cover that suppresses weeds and offers spring feed for both wildlife and soil microbes.
- Oats — Quick-start forage that excels in early fall. While not typically overwintered, it decomposes to provide spring residue and nutrient release.

Legumes (Nitrogen + Protein)
- Winter Peas — High in protein, quick to establish, and fixes nitrogen efficiently. Offers lush growth into early winter.
- Hairy Vetch — Overwinters well and provides nitrogen into spring while helping control erosion with its vining growth.
- KY Pride Crimson Clover — Fixes nitrogen rapidly in fall, then overwinters and blooms early for both deer and pollinators.
- Frosty Berseem Clover — Cold-tolerant and excellent for fall forage. Adds spring green manure when managed as a winter annual.
- Fixation Balansa Clover — Deep taproots improve compaction. This clover overwinters easily, exploding in spring for forage and fertility.
- Persian Enhance Clover 🆕 — Early vigor with excellent palatability for deer. A top-tier attractant in fall food plots, ideal for cold climates.

Forbs & Broadleafs (Pollinators + Minerals)
- Chicory — A deep-mining perennial that accumulates calcium and trace minerals. Offers quality forage into winter and persists across seasons.
- Buckwheat — Rapid growth and quick phosphorus cycling. Typically frost-killed but leaves behind residue and nutrient legacy.

Brassicas & Root Builders (Soil + Forage)
- Radish — Breaks hardpans and stimulates spring microbial activity as roots decompose. Also grazed late fall into winter.
- Purple Top Turnip — Both leaves and bulbs provide excellent late-fall and early-winter feed. Some overwinter depending on zone.
- Barknat Turnip — Cold-tolerant and bred for maximum top and bulb growth; deer-favored and beneficial for spring decomposition.
- Pasja Brassica — Tender and fast-growing with excellent regrowth; ideal for repeated fall grazing.
- Winfred Brassica — A cold-hardy hybrid that withstands browse and snow, providing high-energy forage into deep winter.

Is it no-till friendly?
Absolutely! Just ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
What about weeds?
Suppresses most weeds. Burndown or mow beforehand if needed.

Have the seed but waiting for a while to plan, soil preparation, and then rain
